Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Claim Trophee des Champions Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

PSG players celebrating

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening trophy on fourteen separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past their arch-rivals in Kuwait and capture a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup title.

The Champions League holders seemed to be sailing towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners after the French winger found the net early on.

However, Marseille struck two times late to take a shock lead. First, Mason Greenwood converted from the penalty spot, before Willian Pacho inadvertently directed the ball into his own net for an own-goal.

In a remarkable turn of events, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the dying seconds to force the match into a deciding shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Lucas Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, saving crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all scored successfully for PSG to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

The record winners Paris Saint-Germain, who met last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the past 13 years.
